Pastor Philip Anthony Mitchell believes the Church is living in a season of unprecedented urgency, pointing to global instability, wars, political turmoil, and rapid advances in artificial intelligence as signs that Christians should remain spiritually alert and focused on the return of Jesus Christ.
The founder of 2819 Church shared his convictions while discussing the remarkable response to "For Christ Alone," a worship anthem released by 2819 Worship that has quickly gained traction across social media and worship communities worldwide.
Mitchell said he personally believes believers are living in the closing hours of the current Church age and that God is awakening His people in preparation for Christ's return. Rather than creating fear, he emphasized that biblical prophecy is intended to produce awareness, readiness, and faithfulness among followers of Jesus.
The song emerged from Mitchell's extended preaching series through the Gospel of Matthew, particularly chapter 24, where Jesus discusses future events and His eventual return. As he studied the passage and observed world events, Mitchell became increasingly convinced that many of the conditions described in Scripture are becoming visible in contemporary society.
Worship pastor Trey Heflin said the inspiration for the anthem came after hearing Mitchell preach on Christ's return. One statement in particular stayed with him: that when Christ returns, all debates about truth will finally be settled. Reflecting on that message led Heflin to develop melodies and lyrics centered on devotion to Christ and anticipation of His coming kingdom.
Originally, the church introduced only a portion of the song during worship gatherings. Church leaders expected it to remain a meaningful moment within their congregation, but videos from services quickly spread online. The response generated widespread interest and requests for a full release, ultimately helping propel the song to a global audience. Earlier this year, Reach Records announced the signing of 2819 Worship.
Heflin said the song has become more than a worship experience; it has become a rallying cry for believers who genuinely believe Christ is returning. He noted that while outsiders may view the gatherings as highly energetic worship events, the atmosphere is rooted in conviction, discipleship, and a desire to live faithfully in light of eternity.
The popularity of "For Christ Alone" comes amid rapid growth at 2819 Church, which has become known for its emphasis on biblical teaching and Christ-centered worship. Mitchell and Heflin both pointed to the strong response from younger generations, particularly Gen Z and millennials, as evidence that many are seeking biblical truth rather than entertainment-driven expressions of faith.
According to Mitchell, every line of the anthem was intentionally drawn from Scripture. He believes the song's success reflects a broader movement within the Church to refocus on Christ, eternity, and the hope of His return. As believers sing the lyrics, he said, they are effectively declaring biblical truth back to God while preparing their hearts for what Christians anticipate as the next great event in redemptive history: the return of Jesus Christ.
As the song continues to spread globally, Mitchell remains convinced that God is using worship to unite believers around a common message. For him, the growing impact of "For Christ Alone" is not simply a musical success story but a sign that many Christians are once again placing their attention on Christ's return and the call to live faithfully until that day arrives.
