Taylor Swift's involvement in Toy Story 5 may have been one of Hollywood's best-kept secrets.
According to reports, Disney and Pixar went to extraordinary lengths to prevent news of Swift's participation from leaking, reportedly creating a "decoy version" of the highly anticipated animated sequel that omitted her contribution entirely.
The surprise was finally revealed on June 5 when Swift announced I Knew It, I Knew You, an original song she wrote and produced alongside longtime collaborator Jack Antonoff for the upcoming film. The song is performed from the perspective of beloved cowgirl Jessie and marks a return to Swift's country storytelling roots.
The revelation sent fans into a frenzy, but perhaps even more surprising was the extent of Disney's secrecy campaign.
Speaking at SXSW London, visual effects supervisor Thomas Jordan revealed that only a small circle of executives and creatives were aware that Swift had written a song for the film. According to Jordan, even members of the Toy Story 5 production team remained unaware until shortly before the announcement.
"The crew that made Toy Story 5 did not know about this secret until last week," Jordan explained. "A decoy version" of the film had reportedly been shown to staff and test audiences to ensure the collaboration remained confidential.
Jordan also shared how the partnership came about. Rather than being approached to contribute music, Swift reportedly requested to view an unfinished cut of the movie. Inspired by what she saw, she returned home and immediately began writing.
"She requested to see it before it was finished and she wrote the song and then asked us if we wanted it," Jordan recalled. "And we said, 'Uh, yes! Yes we do.'"
The story only adds to the excitement surrounding the film and highlights Swift's genuine affection for the franchise. Following the announcement, the singer revealed that she has been a lifelong fan of the Toy Story movies and described contributing to the project as a dream come true.
"I fell instantly in love with Toy Story 5 when I was lucky enough to see it in its early stages, and I wrote this song as soon as I got home from the screening," Swift shared. "Sometimes you just know, right?"
For Swift, whose songwriting has often centered on vivid characters and emotional storytelling, stepping into Jessie's boots appears to have been a natural fit.
The collaboration also represents another major milestone in the singer-songwriter's remarkable career, adding Pixar to a résumé that already includes chart-topping albums, blockbuster tours, and award-winning film and television contributions.
If the reports are accurate, Disney's elaborate effort to conceal Swift's involvement may rank among the most ambitious secrecy operations in modern movie history. And judging by the reaction from both Swifties and Toy Story fans, the surprise was well worth keeping under wraps.
Toy Story 5 is scheduled to arrive in theaters later this year.
