Godzilla 2 Release Date, News and Updates: Gareth Edward Returns to Helm the Monsterous Sequel
Warner Bros. has confirmed that a sequel for 2014's Godzilla is currently in the works. The studio also revealed yesterday the release date for Godzilla 2, which will be in June 8, 2018. British director Gareth Edwards will return for the sequel.
During Comic-Con, director Gareth Edwards hinted that we should expect to see classic Godzilla villains Mothra, Ghidora, and Rodan to appear for the sequel. No other details of the plot for the sequel has been released. Last May, Godzilla marked its return to Hollywood and was received with mixed reviews from bot long-time fans and critics, but garnered about $103 million in its international opening, and has garnered around $500 million for it theatrical run. A sequel was then immediately planned after those numbers raked in. Fans of the monster franchise have a lot to be excited about in 2018 as Godzilla returns for the sequel.
The year 2018 also marks the dates of at least 7 superhero movies slated to be released on the same year. At least 1 from Fox, 2 from Marvel and Disney, and 1 from Warner Bros. and DC. It will most certainly be a big competition for blockbuster supremacy, and might as well divide fans on which films they'll be watching.
Edwards is currently working with Disney and Lucasfilm for an unnamed Star Wars project as well as being linked to legendary Pictures' new project Skull Island which is based on the home of another famous monster, King Kong. Both are slated for a 2016 release.
2014's Godzilla will also be released on digital HD on August 26, 2014, and will hit DVD and BluRay shelves on September 16 2014.
Godzilla 2 will crash and smash into theaters June 8, 2018.
