Sometimes generosity shows up in a letter you weren't expecting. For over 261,000 California families, that moment is coming in mid-July.
On Thursday, June 25, Undue Medical Debt announced that a transformative gift from Snap CEO Evan Spiegel and his wife, model and entrepreneur Miranda Kerr, has erased over $550 million in medical debt for more than 261,000 Californians - providing relief to families across the state as healthcare costs continue to weigh on households.
The couple partnered with Undue Medical Debt, a nonprofit that buys medical debt in bulk - meaning for every $10 donated, $1,000 of medical debt is relieved for families in need. Recipients don't have to do anything.
The gift reaches people directly through qualifying debt the nonprofit acquires and cancels on their behalf.
Those who qualify either earn at or below 400% of the federal poverty level or carry medical debt that is more than 5% of their annual income.
Californians whose debt has been cleared will begin receiving notification letters in the mail starting in mid-July.
The couple explained their motivation simply. "When someone you love is sick, all you want to do is focus on helping them get better," Kerr said. "That's why we wanted to support this effort and help relieve medical debt, so families can focus on caring for their loved ones and really supporting their healing."
Undue Medical Debt president and CEO Allison Sesso called the scale of the gift "truly astonishing," noting that no one should go bankrupt because of a cancer diagnosis or have to choose between insulin and groceries.
This isn't the couple's first act of large-scale generosity. In 2022, Spiegel paid off the student loans for the graduating class of Otis College of Art and Design.
In 2025, he was among those who formed the Department of Angels to aid Los Angeles wildfire survivors, personally donating $5 million in immediate aid.
Medical debt is now the leading cause of bankruptcy in the United States - a burden that affects not just finances but mental and spiritual health.
This couple's decision to act quietly and generously on behalf of strangers reflects what Scripture describes in Luke 6:38 - giving in a way that presses down, shaken together, and running over.
For 261,000 families, relief is already on its way.
