One of the friends who says he was with Nolan Wells during the Fourth of July trip to Mississippi's Horn Island before the 18-year-old was found dead is now speaking publicly about what he witnessed, adding a new chapter to the investigation that has gripped the nation.
The friend's decision to speak comes as Wells' family continues demanding answers about the circumstances surrounding the death of the promising college football player. While the full details of his account have not yet been released publicly, his comments mark the first time someone from the group that accompanied Wells has addressed the tragedy.
Wells, a football player at Southwest Mississippi Community College, disappeared on July 4 after traveling to Horn Island with three friends. While the others returned to the mainland, Wells did not. His body was recovered two days later following a massive search involving multiple law enforcement agencies.
Authorities have said they currently do not suspect foul play and have suggested the death was likely an accidental drowning. However, Wells' parents have repeatedly questioned that conclusion and have launched an independent investigation through prominent civil rights attorney Ben Crump.
The family has expressed concern over how the friends responded in the hours after Wells disappeared, noting that they retained attorneys and were reluctant to answer questions while the search for their son was underway. They have also questioned why Wells' cellphone was later tracked to one of the friend's homes.
As public interest continues to grow, Pastor Jamal Bryant has added his voice to those supporting the Wells family. During a service at New Birth Missionary Baptist Church, Bryant led his congregation in prayer and invited Crump to address worshippers.
"We have to keep that fire intense until we can get to the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth," Crump told the congregation, urging continued public attention until every question surrounding Wells' death has been answered.
Bryant encouraged believers to pray for the grieving family while avoiding speculation, emphasizing the importance of seeking truth with compassion.
The family is also pursuing an independent autopsy, funded by former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick, as they seek greater clarity about the events leading to Wells' death.
With one of the friends now speaking publicly, investigators and the Wells family alike hope that new information will help piece together exactly what happened during the trip to Horn Island. For Wells' loved ones, however, the central request remains unchanged: a transparent investigation and honest answers about the loss of their son.
