The Graham family is keeping Lindsey Graham's legacy alive in the most personal way possible.
Just days after the longtime South Carolina senator's sudden death, South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster announced that Lindsey's younger sister, Darline Graham Nordone, will temporarily fill his U.S. Senate seat until a special election determines a permanent successor. The appointment follows public backing from President Donald Trump, who said Nordone was the person her late brother would have wanted to carry on his work.
For many Americans, Nordone is a familiar face behind the scenes rather than on the political stage. She has largely stayed out of elected office, despite being one of Lindsey Graham's closest confidantes throughout his career. Their bond was forged through tragedy after their parents died within 15 months of each other, leaving a 22-year-old Lindsey to raise his 13-year-old sister. He even became her legal guardian, a chapter both siblings often described as defining their relationship.
Now, that deeply personal story has come full circle.
Speaking after her appointment, an emotional Nordone said she believes continuing her brother's service is the best way she can honor him.
"Lindsey has always been there for me. And now, I will be there for him," she said as she accepted the temporary role.
Her appointment ensures Republicans maintain the Senate seat while South Carolina prepares for a special election. A Republican primary is scheduled for August, followed by a general election later this year to choose who will complete the remainder of Graham's term.
Although she has spent most of her professional life working in disability employment services rather than politics, Nordone's appointment is already drawing national attention-not only because of her family connection, but because it represents an emotional continuation of one of Washington's longest-serving Republican careers.
For supporters mourning Lindsey Graham, seeing the person he once raised now stepping into his Senate office has become one of the most poignant moments in the aftermath of his passing.
