Marvel Studios has found its next Black Panther, and by Saturday night, fans were already searching his name. During Marvel's panel at San Diego Comic-Con, director Ryan Coogler and Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige revealed that English actor David Jonsson will play the grown son of T'Challa in "Black Panther 3," arriving in theaters December 15, 2028.
So who is he? Jonsson, 32, is a London-born actor who built his career on the West End stage before breaking into film and television. He's best known for starring roles in "Alien: Romulus" and "The Long Walk," along with a lead part in HBO's "Industry." Coogler introduced him to the Hall H crowd by highlighting his work in "The Long Walk" moments before the surprise reveal.
Jonsson's character was introduced as a child at the end of "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever," the son of T'Challa and Nakia (Lupita Nyong'o). Now grown, he'll step into the mantle his father once wore. Jonsson thanked the cast and crew from the stage, calling it "the honor and privilege and the blessing" to join the Marvel family, as the crowd broke into Wakanda chants.
The role carries a deeper layer for fans who've followed the franchise since its start. Chadwick Boseman, who originated T'Challa in 2018, was open about his Christian faith throughout his career, once sharing that he had specifically prayed for the role that would go on to make him a global icon. Boseman was raised in a Christian home and baptized at a Baptist church in South Carolina, and he carried that faith with him through his rise in Hollywood. A role born, by his own account, out of prayer now passes to a new actor and a new generation of fans.
Coogler, fresh off his first Oscar win for "Sinners," returns to direct, with the film set to shoot on 70mm. Letitia Wright is expected to reprise her role as Shuri, and Winston Duke returns as M'Baku. "Black Panther 3" follows "Avengers: Secret Wars" in the MCU timeline and is expected to shape the franchise's next chapter.
For longtime fans, this casting isn't just about who wears the suit next - it's a reminder of the story of purpose and faith that built Wakanda's legacy in the first place.
