The late Christian worship pioneer Brian Doerksen is being remembered not only for the songs that transformed worship around the world, but also for the extraordinary love he showed his family in the final days of his life.
In a deeply emotional tribute, Brian's wife and high school sweetheart, Joyce Doerksen, shared intimate memories of the man she first fell in love with at just 15 years old, revealing that even as he battled Stage 4 cancer, his greatest concern remained his family.
"My husband was a deeply sensitive man," Joyce wrote. "From the time he was a boy, he felt life intensely-its beauty, its joy, and its pain."
The couple, who married in 1984, built a life filled with what Joyce described as "sweet, ordinary moments" together-from coffee dates and long walks hand in hand to family meals, movie nights with their children, chai with friends, and countless RV trips where Brian travelled to lead worship for churches willing to host him.
One of the most moving moments of Joyce's tribute came as she recounted Brian's final wish before his death on July 21 at the age of 60.
Rather than remain in hospital surrounded by machines, Brian insisted on returning home so he could spend his final hours with his family-especially his two sons, who both live with Fragile X syndrome.
"A few days before he died, he insisted on being brought home without all the medical help of the hospital," Joyce shared. "In exchange for having his boys, who have few words, to see him before he died and after, so they would understand what happened to their dad."
She revealed that their local community rallied around the family, bringing medical expertise into their home to ensure Brian remained comfortable while making his final wish possible.
Brian leaves behind Joyce and their six children-four daughters and two sons-following a remarkable ministry that influenced generations of worshippers across the globe.
Born in Abbotsford, British Columbia, Brian became one of contemporary Christian music's most respected worship songwriters. His catalogue includes beloved classics such as Faithful One, Refiner's Fire, Light the Fire Again, Hope of the Nations, and the globally recognised anthem Come Now Is the Time to Worship, songs that have been translated, recorded, and sung by churches worldwide for decades.
Throughout his career, Brian served with Vineyard Churches before releasing acclaimed worship albums through Hosanna! Music and Integrity Music. His contributions earned him numerous honours, including a Gospel Music Association Dove Award, multiple Covenant Awards, and a Juno Award for his 2006 album Holy God.
Beyond music, Brian devoted himself to pastoral ministry, co-founding The Bridge Church in Abbotsford in 2006 before later leading Prairie Bible Institute's School of Worship Arts, where he mentored a new generation of worship leaders and songwriters.
While millions knew Brian through the songs that filled churches every Sunday, Joyce's tribute paints a portrait of the man behind the music-a devoted husband, loving father, and deeply compassionate soul whose greatest legacy may well be the family he cherished until his final breath.
