Kirk Franklin has shared a deeply moving memory of Whitney Houston that is giving fans a fresh glimpse into the late superstar's final months-and it's one centered on faith, gospel music, and the healing power of hymns.
During a heartfelt appearance on The Jennifer Hudson Show, Franklin reflected on his relationship with Houston, revealing that one of their last encounters became an unforgettable, hours-long worship session.
According to Franklin, Houston had a special love for the gospel community and maintained close friendships with many of its biggest names, including CeCe Winans, Shirley Caesar, Kim Burrell, and Donnie McClurkin.
"Whitney loved the gospel community," Franklin explained, noting that whenever she saw what she affectionately called "her people," music naturally became the focus.
The Grammy-winning artist then recalled a quiet meeting at an Atlanta restaurant shortly before Houston's death in February 2012. The restaurant was nearly empty except for a piano-and what happened next has left fans emotional.
Franklin said the pair spent two to three hours gathered around the piano as Houston sang one beloved hymn after another.
From "Amazing Grace" and "Precious Lord" to "Blessed Assurance," Houston poured herself into the songs that had shaped her faith long before she became one of the world's biggest pop stars.
"As a singer, a lot of times you sing and you start to heal yourself," Franklin reflected. "You could just tell that she didn't want to let it go."
He admitted Houston was no longer the powerhouse vocalist the world remembered at the height of her career, but said there were still breathtaking moments that reminded him of the extraordinary gift God had given her.
"She wasn't the Whitney that we remembered," Franklin said, "but she gave moments to remind you that it's still there."
The touching story resonated with Jennifer Hudson, who thanked Franklin for sharing such a personal memory of one of music's most iconic voices.
The conversation then shifted to Franklin's own favorite hymn, with the gospel legend naming "Amazing Grace" because, he said, it "says so much so quickly."
Franklin also discussed his new single, "Able," explaining that he intentionally wanted to create a joyful song that reminds believers they can celebrate their faith while trusting that "there's nothing that you face that God isn't able to take care of."
