'Orange is the New Black' Season 3 Netflix Filming, Real Life Piper Kerman Shares Extended Enlightening Interview on the U.S. Prison System, Watch Here (VIDEO)
Piper Kerman, who wrote the book that inspired the hit Netflix show, "Orange is the New Black" took time to sit down and do an extended interview with Vox's Ezra Klein and share about her time in prison and about the failures of the U.S. criminal justice system.
"A huge percentage of people who are in our prisons and jails right now, are there for non-violent offenses. So in terms of protecting us from violence, that's simply not what our prison system is doing. People who commit violent crimes do go to prison for very long periods of time. Though frankly, people who commit non-violent drug offenses sometimes go to prison for comparable sentences," shares Kerman.
Kerman serves on the board of the Women's Prison Association and is a frequently-invited speaker to students of law, criminology, gender and women's studies, sociology, and creative writing, and also to groups that include the American Correctional Association's Disproportionate Minority Confinement Task Force, federal probation officers, public defenders, justice reform advocates and volunteers, book clubs, and formerly and currently incarcerated people.
Kerman was the 2014 recipient of the Justice Trailblazer Award from the John Jay College Center on Media, Crime & Justice.
"Orange is the New Black" series on Netflix Season 3 is in production. The show is based around Taylor Schilling, who plays Piper Chapman that gets sent to prison years after she got caught up in transporting drug money across international lines. "Orange is the New Black" is made by 'Weeds' creator Jenji Kohan, and is based on Piper Kerman's memoir of a year spent in prison.
"Orange is the New Black" Season 2 released in its entirety on June 6, 2014. Netflix experimented this format of releasing full seasons at once and it has been very successful for them. Netflix other hit series "House of Cards" released this same way as well with Season 1 and Season 2 and was very successful.
All 13 episodes of Season 1 of the netflix original series "Orange is the New Black" released exclusively on Netflix July 11, 2013 and Season 2 released in June 2014. So it is pretty safe to say that "Orange is the New Black" Season 3 will release sometime in June of 2015.
"Orange is the New Black" became the latest hit series for Netflix after a surprisingly huge reaction to its first season this summer it's controversial yet honest portrayal of prison life for women that is not been discussed much in popular culture especially through a series.
