Daniel Caesar brought his "Son of Spergy" tour to a sold-out Barclays Center on July 30, giving Brooklyn the tour's only New York date and turning the arena into what one reviewer called a sea of lights and singing.
Faye Webster opened the night before Caesar took the stage with "Rain Down" and "Call on Me," setting a tone that stayed intimate even as the arena reached full capacity. He performed through the show despite a lower-leg injury, moving through the set without letting the pain show. Caesar told the sold-out crowd early on that New York felt like a second home to him, behind only Toronto.
The set leaned into the themes of his current album, which confronts masculinity, faith and self-importance with heavy gospel influence, without turning the show into a lecture. Fan favorites like "CYANIDE," "SUPERPOSITION" and "Best Part" drew the night's biggest singalongs, while acoustic renditions of "Transform" and "Streetcar" let his voice carry the room. The encore brought stripped-down versions of "Blessed," "We Find Love," "Superpowers" and "Loose."
The show is part of a run that's carried real spiritual weight throughout - Caesar has described the album's title as a reflection on both his earthly father and his faith, framing himself as "Spergy's son" in body and "God's son" in spirit.
Caesar's North American run continues through August 24 in Anaheim before he heads to Europe and the UK.
