Lisa Knowles-Smith Steals The Stellar Awards With Five Wins—While One Of Gospel’s Most-Nominated Stars Goes Home Empty-Handed

The 2026 Stellar Gospel Music Awards had plenty of praise, worship and polished acceptance speeches-but beneath the church hats and gospel royalty, there were also some genuine surprises.

And nobody had a bigger night than Lisa Knowles-Smith.

Knowles-Smith walked away with a whopping five Stellar Awards, making her one of the ceremony's dominant figures. Four of those victories were connected to Revival: Live in Dallas, her project with The Brown Singers. She also claimed the prestigious Albertina Walker Female Artist of the Year honor and Song of the Year for "Promises (Live)."

But while Knowles-Smith was collecting trophies, another heavily favored gospel star experienced a very different kind of night.

Kim Person entered the awards tied with gospel legend John P. Kee for the most nominations-seven apiece-but failed to win a single award. That's the sort of awards-show twist nobody puts in the promotional trailer.

Meanwhile, Darrel Walls had his own major victory lap. The 35-year-old singer won Artist of the Year and Contemporary Male Artist of the Year for Heart of Mine, firmly establishing himself as one of gospel music's leading voices this year.

There was even more hardware to go around. Vincent Bohanan & SOV scored three awards for Live in New York, including Album of the Year, while Jonathan McReynolds, John P. Kee and Jekalyn Carr were among the artists taking home multiple honors.

The evening wasn't only about competition, either.

Tasha Cobbs Leonard received the Aretha Franklin Icon Award, while Pastor Mike Jr. was honored with the Thomas A. Dorsey Most Notable Achievement Award-two major recognitions that placed them among gospel music's most celebrated contemporary figures.

There were some intriguing category results too. Erica Campbell took Contemporary Female Artist of the Year, John P. Kee won Traditional Male Artist of the Year, Jekalyn Carr claimed Traditional Artist of the Year, and Lecrae won Rap/Hip Hop Gospel Album of the Year for Reconstruction.
Perhaps one of the most interesting signs of where gospel music is heading came in the Contemporary Duo/Chorus Group of the Year category. Jonathan McReynolds and Jamal Roberts won for "Still (Live)," beating a field that included Mariah Carey featuring The Clark Sisters and Tasha Cobbs Leonard featuring John Legend.

The ceremony was taped at Charlotte's Spectrum Center on August 15 with Kirk Franklin serving as host, bringing together traditional gospel veterans, contemporary hitmakers and rising artists under one roof.

And if there was one storyline impossible to ignore, it was this: the night belonged to Lisa Knowles-Smith.

Five trophies, Female Artist of the Year and Song of the Year is not merely a good awards night-it's the kind of sweep that can change the trajectory of a gospel career.
