The Race Across the World family has been struck by an almost unimaginable second tragedy. Jo Gardiner has died at 61 following a long battle with cancer-just 15 months after her 24-year-old son and television partner, Sam Gardiner, suffered a devastating brain injury in a horrific car crash.
Sam was driving alone along the A34 Kingsway near Manchester at approximately 9:50 p.m. on May 26, 2025, when he lost control of his Volkswagen Golf R Estate during what an inquest later described as "appalling" weather. The vehicle struck the central reservation, left the roadway and rolled before coming to rest on its side.
Emergency responders rushed Sam to Salford Royal Hospital with severe head injuries and doctors placed him in an induced coma. However, medical staff concluded that there was no realistic prospect of a meaningful recovery. He died three days after the crash on May 29, 2025, with the official cause recorded as a devastating brain injury sustained in a road traffic collision.
The subsequent inquest heard that witnesses had seen Sam overtaking and undertaking other vehicles despite heavy rain, standing water and poor visibility. The condition of the car's tires, his manner of driving and the dangerous weather were all identified as significant contributing factors. Sam had been returning from landscaping work in Scotland and was reportedly heading home for a family celebration. People and the Manchester Evening News reported the findings.
Now, little more than a year after losing the son with whom she shared her unforgettable television adventure, Jo has also died. Her family said she faced cancer through a "long and courageous battle" and remembered her as a woman who "lived fully, fiercely and never did anything by halves."
Jo and Sam became fan favorites while racing across Latin America during the BBC show's second season. Although they finished fourth, their loving-and occasionally chaotic-mother-son relationship made them one of the series' most memorable teams. Sam once called his mother "amazing," while Jo's devotion to him remained at the emotional center of their story.
The BBC and Studio Lambert remembered Jo as the "matriarch" of the Race Across the World family and praised her kindness, strength and passion for life. She is survived by her son Charlie and other relatives.
Their television journey was supposed to be an adventure that brought a mother and son closer together.
