Bethel Church senior leader Bill Johnson is a married man again-and he certainly did not believe in having a long engagement.
Johnson, 75, reportedly married Linda Francoeur in a private ceremony on August 18, exactly one month after proposing during his 75th-birthday celebration. The whirlwind wedding comes four years after Johnson lost his first wife, Beni Johnson, who died from cancer in July 2022 at the age of 67. Bill and Beni had been married for more than four decades and raised three children together.
Johnson revealed his engagement while appearing at Kenneth Copeland's Southwest Believers' Convention, despite being in the middle of a four-month sabbatical from Bethel. Asking Francoeur to stand before the audience, he announced, "I am engaged to be married," before teasing that the wedding would happen "very soon." Few listeners may have realized just how soon he meant.
The proposal itself took place during Johnson's July 18 birthday celebration. According to the pastor, he traditionally gives gifts to his children and grandchildren on his birthday-but this year, he had one particularly dramatic surprise waiting for the family.
Johnson said he asked Francoeur to stand before dropping to one knee and proposing. His children reportedly erupted in cheers, giving the relationship their enthusiastic blessing.
"Linda loves my family so much," Johnson said, explaining that his relatives were "crazy about her." The pastor became emotional while recounting the moment, admitting that trying to reenact the proposal publicly would leave him "a mess."
The marriage inevitably raised questions about how Francoeur would enter a family and ministry world shaped for decades by Beni. Johnson, however, addressed that delicate issue directly and made it clear that his new wife would not be expected to imitate or replace the woman with whom he shared most of his adult life.
"She's not going to be filling Beni's shoes. That's impossible," Johnson said. "Beni took her shoes with her, and Linda has her own shoes to fill."
Johnson described his new bride as a woman of "deep, deep compassion" who possesses "great wisdom and discernment." He also said she had already become "a great strength" in his life.
The pastor previously shared the engagement news with the Bethel congregation, presenting the relationship as a new chapter rather than an attempt to rewrite his history with Beni. Now, with the birthday proposal followed by a wedding only 31 days later, Johnson and Francoeur have quietly made their new beginning official.
For a church leader whose life has unfolded before enormous congregations, livestream audiences and an international ministry following, the decision to marry privately appears especially significant. There was no massive Bethel production or lengthy public countdown-just a tightly guarded ceremony and a remarkably fast trip from "Will you marry me?" to "I do."
