Dolly Parton’s Voice Returns Two Weeks After Her Death on Poignant New Song “Bound to Ride”

Just two weeks after Dolly Parton's death at age 80, fans have been given an emotional new opportunity to hear the country legend's unmistakable voice.

Parton appears on the newly released "Bound to Ride," the lead single from Where the Soul Never Dies: Celebrating 80 Years of The Stanley Brothers. The tribute album is scheduled to arrive on October 16.

The timing makes the recording especially poignant. "Bound to Ride" is Parton's first posthumous release, and its traditional Appalachian sound takes her back to the mountain music that shaped her childhood in East Tennessee.

Parton is joined on the track by the First Ladies of Bluegrass-Alison Brown, Becky Buller, Sierra Hull, Missy Raines and Molly Tuttle. The celebrated musicians reportedly recorded the instrumental track together before Parton added her vocals separately at her own studio during a COVID-19 surge around 2022.

Yet Parton apparently did far more than simply sing the words placed before her. Producer Garry West said the team was stunned by what she delivered, describing it as "the full Dolly." She even called out the individual musicians by name during the performance, giving the recording the warmth and personality for which she was famous.

The song was popularized by bluegrass pioneers Carter and Ralph Stanley, better known as the Stanley Brothers, through their 1964 recording. For this new rendition, the First Ladies of Bluegrass reshaped the arrangement and added an eight-bar bridge drawn from a lesser-known verse.

Parton's appearance now carries a weight no one could have anticipated when it was recorded. A song about being "bound to ride" has become one of the final chapters in a career filled with music about journeys, homecoming, faith and heaven.

Those spiritual themes were never far from Parton's work. From "He's Alive" and "The Seeker" to "There Was Jesus" with Zach Williams and "When I Get Where I'm Going" with Brad Paisley, she repeatedly sang about Christ, forgiveness and the hope of eternal life.

The forthcoming Stanley Brothers tribute also features Willie Nelson with Sierra Ferrell, Dierks Bentley with Della Mae, Jamey Johnson and Shawn Camp, the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Rhiannon Giddens and Dirk Powell, Ralph Stanley II and Tim O'Brien, and Steve Martin with Ed Helms.

Still, it is Parton's voice that is likely to make this release particularly difficult-and beautiful-for fans to hear. Dolly may be gone, but on "Bound to Ride," the Smoky Mountain girl rides again.
