“Toy Story 5” Storms The Billion-Dollar Club—But Woody And Buzz Still Can’t Beat The Minions

Disney and Pixar have another billion-dollar blockbuster on their hands-but Woody, Buzz Lightyear and the rest of the toy box still have some climbing to do.

Toy Story 5 has officially entered the top 10 highest-grossing animated movies of all time, earning an astonishing $1.141 billion worldwide through September 8. The result places the latest Pixar sequel at No. 9 on the all-time animated chart, just ahead of 2019's Toy Story 4, which finished with $1.073 billion.

Yes, the toys have beaten themselves-but they have not yet managed to overthrow the Minions.

The yellow troublemakers remain comfortably ahead in eighth place, with 2015's Minions having grossed $1.159 billion globally. That leaves Toy Story 5 roughly $18 million short of taking the next spot, meaning the Pixar movie could still move higher if audiences continue showing up.

The film, directed by McKenna Harris and Andrew Stanton, once again reunites moviegoers with the beloved characters who have been entertaining families since the original Toy Story arrived in 1995. Joan Cusack returns as the voice of Jessie, while franchise favorites Tom Hanks and Tim Allen are also associated with the latest chapter as Woody and Buzz.

Even so, Pixar's biggest animated hit remains Inside Out 2. The 2024 sequel earned nearly $1.699 billion worldwide and currently occupies third place on the all-time list. It sits behind Disney's Zootopia 2, which has reportedly amassed $1.866 billion, and the Chinese animated sensation Ne Zha 2, which reigns at No. 1 with a staggering $2.26 billion.

Disney continues to dominate the upper reaches of the chart. Frozen II, Frozen, Incredibles 2, Zootopia 2, Inside Out 2 and two Toy Story installments all appear within the top 10. Universal's The Super Mario Bros. Movie and Minions are among the few titles preventing the Mouse House from taking over the entire list.

For Pixar, the success of Toy Story 5 also proves that audiences are apparently nowhere near ready to put Woody, Buzz and Jessie back in storage. After five theatrical installments-and decades of emotional goodbyes-the toys continue finding their way back onto the big screen and into moviegoers' wallets.

Whether Toy Story 5 can race past Minions remains to be seen. But one thing is already clear: nearly 30 years after their first adventure, Pixar's most famous toys still know how to draw a massive crowd.
