Singer-songwriter Duncan Sheik, best known for his massive 1990s hit "Barely Breathing," has been hospitalized in New York City and is reportedly in critical but stable condition.
According to TMZ, sources with direct knowledge confirmed that the 56-year-old musician is receiving treatment at a New York City hospital. What sent Sheik to the hospital remains a mystery, with neither his representatives nor his family revealing the nature of the medical emergency.
His team later confirmed the troubling news in a statement posted to his Instagram account.
"Duncan is currently receiving medical care and remains in critical but stable condition," the statement read. "Out of respect for Duncan and our family, we will not be sharing any further medical details at this time."
The family also asked fans and the media to give Sheik space as they navigate the frightening situation.
"We kindly ask for privacy during this incredibly difficult time and will provide updates when appropriate," the statement continued. "Thank you for the continued love and support."
The words "critical but stable" immediately raised alarm among fans, especially because no warning had been given that Sheik was facing a health problem. For now, the cause of his hospitalization and how long he may remain under medical care are unknown.
Sheik became one of the most recognizable voices of the late 1990s after releasing "Barely Breathing" from his self-titled 1996 debut album. The song became a radio fixture, spent months on the charts and earned him a Grammy nomination for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance.
While many casual listeners still associate him with that one unforgettable hit, Sheik went on to build an even more impressive career behind the scenes. He composed the music for the Broadway phenomenon Spring Awakening, winning Tony Awards for Best Original Score and Best Orchestrations. The show also earned a Grammy Award for Best Musical Show Album.
The hospitalization comes as Sheik remains connected to several theater projects. According to People, a new off-Broadway revival of Spring Awakening is expected to open in December, while another musical project, Memoirs of Amorous Gentlemen, has also been in development.
