Alan Ritchson is in talks to headline Sony's big-screen adaptation of "Helldivers," stepping into the lead role after Jason Momoa's exit from the project earlier this year, according to multiple industry reports.
Momoa had been attached to the sci-fi action film since February, with "Fast & Furious" director Justin Lin on board to helm the adaptation of Arrowhead Game Studios' popular video game franchise. Sources say Momoa departed in June over creative differences, and Lin remains attached as Sony moves forward with Ritchson as the likely new lead. A deal has not yet been finalized, and Sony has not issued an official comment.
If the deal closes, it would mark Ritchson's first time headlining a major theatrical studio feature. The 43-year-old actor, best known for playing the title role in Amazon's "Reacher," has built a rapidly rising film career, with supporting roles in "Fast X" and "The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare," and a current lead role alongside Owen Wilson in "Runner." The Helldivers film is targeting a November 2027 release.
Ritchson has been open about approaching even his most physical, non-faith-based roles as an opportunity to reach audiences he might not otherwise connect with. The actor runs InstaChurch, his own YouTube channel where he teaches Scripture and discusses faith, and has said he doesn't believe his roles need to be "saintly" to matter - pointing to how even difficult, imperfect stories can open doors for real conversations about God.
