More than seven months after Nancy Guthrie vanished from her Tucson-area home, investigators are still working through an enormous backlog of leads - and a retired FBI agent is pushing back on one of the case's most persistent online theories.
Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos has said authorities have received an estimated 40,000 to 50,000 tips since Guthrie disappeared on February 1, with DNA, surveillance footage, and digital records still being processed across multiple state and federal labs. No suspect has been named.
Much of the internet's attention has centered on a figure dubbed online as "Porch Guy." But retired FBI agent Jennifer Coffindaffer dismissed the theory this week, reportedly calling the man "a mope" and arguing the case bears the marks of experienced, organized operators rather than a single amateur suspect. Coffindaffer pointed to the difficulty investigators have had tracing ransom-related communications and cryptocurrency demands, floating a "wrench attack" theory - a term used for coercion-based extortion - as a more consistent explanation for the case's pattern.
Other claims continue to circulate without confirmation. A YouTube creator says she recorded lights on inside Guthrie's home during a visit to the property, but the Pima County Sheriff's Department has not linked the footage to the investigation.
Separately, online claims about a tablet allegedly belonging to Guthrie have also gone unconfirmed; officials say no such device has been reported to them as stolen.
Guthrie's daughter, Annie, and son-in-law, Tommaso Cioni - the last people to see her before she disappeared - have been publicly cleared as suspects by Nanos, who described the family as "cooperative and gracious" victims in the case.
