Hayden Panettiere's closest friends gathered at a Malibu church on Saturday for an emotional celebration of the late actress's life, but the absence of two people once central to her world has already raised questions.
Approximately 150 guests reportedly attended the service, including Paris Hilton, Evan Ross and Panettiere's former Nashville co-stars Connie Britton, Charles Esten, Lennon Stella and Jonathan Jackson. Ruby Rose, who described Panettiere as her best friend, was also among those mourning the 36-year-old actress.
Sources described the church memorial as both "emotional and beautiful." Several of Panettiere's Nashville colleagues reportedly shared memories, while Esten delivered a musical tribute. The service also included the release of doves-a poignant Christian symbol frequently associated with peace, hope and the soul's release into God's care.
However, Panettiere's mother, Lesley Vogel, and her on-and-off boyfriend, Brian Hickerson, were reportedly absent. Some reports claimed neither was invited, although Vogel reportedly said a family emergency prevented her from attending. The actress's father, Skip Panettiere, helped organize the memorial.
The absences are especially striking given Panettiere's reported estrangement from her mother and her turbulent history with Hickerson. Yet those attending the ceremony appeared determined to keep the focus on her life, friendships and work rather than the painful controversies surrounding her final years.
Panettiere became a household name through roles in Heroes, Remember the Titans and Nashville. Her portrayal of country singer Juliette Barnes earned her two Golden Globe nominations and made her one of television's most recognizable young stars. She is survived by her daughter, Kaya.
Her death came three years after the sudden loss of her younger brother, Jansen Panettiere, in 2023. Friends said his death affected her profoundly.
For the stars gathered inside the Malibu church, the memorial offered an opportunity to remember more than Panettiere's struggles. It honored the actress, mother and friend whose life touched millions-and whose death at only 36 has left Hollywood grieving.
