Tim Tebow is stepping back from Life Surge after an investigation raised troubling questions about what happens at the Christian organization's events. The former NFL quarterback, who has regularly appeared as a speaker, said Friday that his team is investigating the allegations and that his relationship with Life Surge is on pause while he learns more.
The decision follows a Sept. 24 investigation by Mother Jones and Pablo Torre Finds Out. It alleged that Life Surge builds trust through Christian messaging and celebrity speakers before pitching costly courses in trading, real estate and business. Former customers and employees cited in the report described high-pressure sales tactics, including suggestions that attendees use credit cards, home equity or retirement savings to pay for programs costing tens of thousands of dollars.
Speaking to reporters in Gainesville, Florida, on Sept. 25, Tebow called the allegations "extremely, extremely serious." He said his team was looking into them and that he had paused the relationship until he could better understand the facts. His response raises a question beyond whether he will speak at another event: what responsibility does a trusted public figure have to examine the products sold to an audience he helps attract?
Life Surge disputes the investigation's central claims. In a lengthy response to the reporters, spokesperson Richard Lorenzen denied wrongdoing. The allegations remain contested, and Tebow has not announced a conclusion from his team's inquiry.
The scrutiny comes as Life Surge founder Joe Johnson has also faced a separate Department of Justice case involving a company he previously founded. That case did not involve Life Surge. Johnson agreed to a settlement that gave the government the central relief it sought, while admitting no wrongdoing.
For attendees drawn by faith-centered speakers, the question now is how clearly the event distinguishes inspiration from a sales pitch. Tebow's pause signals that he wants answers about that distinction. Whether his inquiry leads him to resume the partnership may depend on what his team learns about the programs offered after speakers leave the stage.
