Those figures are early estimates, with final weekend results still pending.
The matchup brings two very different attractions into theaters. Other Mommy delivers supernatural terror, starring Chastain in a story about a girl menaced by an entity resembling her mother. The Social Reckoning brings Sorkin back to the world of Facebook, following whistleblower Frances Haugen and journalist Jeff Horwitz as they expose the company's internal practices. Its cast includes Mikey Madison, Jeremy Allen White, and Jeremy Strong.
For Other Mommy, the latest forecast represents an encouraging climb. Boxoffice Pro's advance prediction placed its opening between $17 million and $22 million; the newer $27.5 million estimate suggests stronger early business than that initial range anticipated. With Halloween approaching, the film has a timely hook for audiences seeking a theatrical scare.
The competition also includes Verity, the Anne Hathaway-Dakota Johnson thriller entering its second weekend. Boxoffice Pro forecast another $15 million to $20 million for the Colleen Hoover adaptation, making it a contender in the advance outlook. If Other Mommy maintains its latest projected pace, however, Verity would face a steeper climb to retain the top spot.
The outlook for The Social Reckoning is more subdued. Its latest projected opening falls at the bottom of Boxoffice Pro's earlier $6 million-$10 million range. That would leave it well behind the $22.4 million debut of The Social Network in 2010, despite the new film's recognizable cast and provocative subject.
That gap gives the weekend a compelling industry storyline: can a star-led horror film turn seasonal interest into a commanding victory, and can a prestige drama find an audience beyond its opening frame? Early forecasts favor Chastain's scare vehicle, but Saturday turnout and Sunday estimates will determine how decisively the race breaks.
