Beach Boys co-founder Mike Love is facing serious health challenges at 85, according to longtime friend and fellow performer John Stamos. In an emotional statement shared Sunday, October 11, the Full House actor described the uncertainty surrounding Love's condition while explaining why the singer remains determined to perform.
The update followed the Beach Boys' October 10 concert at Cincinnati's PNC Pavilion, where Stamos helped Love onto the stage. Love remained seated during the performance, with other band members handling lead vocals on songs he traditionally sings and the veteran musician contributing backing vocals at times. The appearance marked the group's first public concert since July, following a series of canceled dates.
Stamos shared his message while traveling to Nashville for a scheduled performance at the Ryman Auditorium. He described Love as a mentor and father figure, explaining that doctors, relatives, and friends had encouraged the singer to prioritize his health. According to Stamos, Love nevertheless wanted to be surrounded by his bandmates, friends, and audience-the people he felt would help lift his spirits.
"We hope he'll be doing what he loves for years to come, but we don't know what the future holds. We have tonight," Stamos wrote. His statement did not disclose a diagnosis or announce a hospitalization, leaving the precise nature of Love's current health difficulties unspecified.
The message also reflected the weight of a musical friendship spanning 41 years. Stamos acknowledged how difficult it was to see someone he had long regarded as larger than life become physically vulnerable, while emphasizing that changes in Love's stage presence had not diminished his affection for the singer.
Love previously discussed health setbacks in June, describing recovery from bronchitis followed by COVID. Those earlier disclosures provide background to his interrupted touring schedule, but they do not establish the cause of the serious health challenges Stamos described in his latest statement.
