ABC Anchor Elizabeth Vargas Returns to Rehab for Alcohol Dependency

ABC reporter Elizabeth Vargas has entered a rehabilitation center again to undergo treatment for alcohol dependency, the anchor and the network announced on Sunday.

Vargas, who is best known as co-host of the popular "20/20" newsmagazine, said in a statement that she decided to enter the treatment center during the weekend while she is on vacation.

The 51-year-old host admitted that recovering from her alcohol dependency has been tougher than expected, which forced her to opt to undergo further treatment, saying that she has been letting her family and co-employees at ABC down over the past several months.

"While on vacation this weekend, I decided to return to a recovery center. As so many other recovering alcoholics know, overcoming the disease can be a long and incredibly difficult process," Vargas said in a statement, the NY Daily News reported. "I feel I have let myself, my co-workers and most importantly my family down and for that I am ashamed and sorry."

Late last year, Vargas admitted that she has been struggling to cope up with her dependence on alcohol. She then decided to enter the treatment facility where she spent several weeks of rehab.

Vargas did not clarify how long she is planning to undergo rehab, but she vowed to try harder this time, while also expressing gratitude to the people who have been behind her since she made her struggles public.

"I am committed to battling and addressing this debilitating disease and want to thank everyone who has offered their unwavering support during this trying time," Vargas said.

ABC News spokesperson Julie Townsend also released a statement, expressing full support to Vargas as she continue her battle to eradicate her alcohol dependency, while also adding that they will welcome the host with open arms when she feels ready to return to work.

"Nothing is more important than Elizabeth's health and well-being and we stand squarely behind her," Townsend said in a statement. "Our thoughts are with Elizabeth and her family and we look forward to having her back at ABC News when she feels ready to return."
