The Smashing Pumpkins New Album release date, news, and updates: Billy Corgan Announces Release Date for the First New Album
The Smashing Pumpkins rose to fame in the early 90s' delivery grunge/garage sounds to the mainstream. They've also toured with bands like Nirvana and Red Hot Chili Peppers during the peak of their fame.
Front man, Billy Corgan, announced earlier this year that he will be releasing 2 new albums. The first titled as "Monuments to an Elegy" and the second being "Day for Night." The eccentric vocalist of the band had planned to release a collection of 44 songs for free under the project name of "Teargarden by Kaleidyscope" back in 2008 with the release of the first song being "Song for a Son." By 2011, 10 tracks were released to fans for free from the official Smashing Pumpkins website. Soon afterwards, the concept of releasing free music has stopped and prompted to release the album "Oceania" which is comprised of the song from "Teargarden by Kaleidyscope" and is viewed as an album within an album. Monuments to an Elegy and Day for Night will also be albums within the album of Teargarden.
Over the weekend during a conversation with Stereogum, Corgan noted that the release of Monuments to an Elegy had been given an earlier release date stating, "Actually, the first one, 'Monuments to an Elegy,' has been bumped up to, at this moment, December 9th." It was reported earlier in the year however that both albums were originally planned to be released sometime in 2015, but due to finishing the album faster than anticipated, it is now scheduled to be released this December. In the same interview with Stereogum Corgan also explained that this new endeavor "...will be the beginning a new era of what the Smashing Pumpkins could be in the 21st century, or it will be the end. In big capital letters. Goodbye, I'm done."
The new album will also feature Motley Crue drummer Tommy Lee. With the departure of Mike Byrne and bassist Nicole Fiorentino, guitarist Jeff Schroeder is the only other official bandmate of Billy Corgan in The Smashing Pumpkins.
Monuments to an Elegy will be released on December 9 and Day for Night will be released sometime in 2015.
