Minecraft's Sale To Microsoft Confirmed: Microsoft Spends Over 2.5 Billion In The Buying Of The Video Game Minecraft Although The Founders Will Not Be Joining The Microsoft Team
We have the latest news for you on Minecraft's sale to Microsoft. Microsoft announced on Monday that they are buying Mojang, the Swedish developers behind the popular game Minecraft. Microsoft has pumped $2.5 billion into the deal and the acquisition will be closed towards the final days of the year. Minecraft is the most popular game on Microsoft's Xbox gaming system and has been downloaded over 100 million times on PC in the past 5 years.
Fans of the game have been very vocal about their concerns for the game's future after the acquisition by Microsoft. Meanwhile, Microsoft is reassuring the game's fans that all will be well. Head of Xbox, Phil Spencer, was quoted saying, "Minecraft is one of the most popular franchises of all time. We are going to maintain Minecraft and its community in all the ways people love it today, with a commitment to nurture and grow it long into the future."
Some of Mojang's founders among them Markus "Notch" Persson are set to leave the company. Notch is the biggest shareholder at Mojang and has decided he is not interested in owning a company of such global connotation as written on Minecraft's blog post.
Markus Persson published a blog post on Monday saying, "As soon as this deal is finalized, I will leave Mojang and go back to doing Ludum Dares and small web experiments. If I ever accidentally make something that seems to gain traction, I'll probably abandon it immediately." Markus is a known advocate for independent gaming and has time and again criticized Microsoft for trying to ruin the openness of the PC.
Microsoft had tried to buy Mojang in the past. They made a quick move to secure the deal once it was reported that other suitors had expressed their interest. A person familiar with the matter said that an exclusivity agreement was signed by the two companies in July once it became clear that Mojang founders were open to selling the company.
Microsoft is anticipating that Minecraft will rejuvenate the struggling Windows smart phone system by drawing a younger crop of users. Hopefully, Minecraft will boost windows competition with its rivals in the smart phone business.
