Utopia TV series news: FOX might consider pulling the plug on the series as ratings remain shaky

Utopia TV series news:  Judging from its ratings, Utopia, FOX Channel's newest reality series, might not go beyond its  first season, which aired last September 7.

Inspired by the hit reality show Big Brother, Utopia was planned to run for 52 weeks, with "no rules, no leaders, no plumbing". Utopia's pioneers are given shelter and a set sum of money to coexist in a remote, yet supposedly ideal society. They can even interact with the outside world.

Viewers can vote out who they think must leave Utopia. Newcomers are then added to the show.

The 2-hour pilot episode, which aired last September 7, had a rating of 2.0 among 18-49 year old age group, and had 4.63 million viewers tuned in - way below than what was expected of the multi-million dollar series, which was expected to fill in the shoes of the waning American Idol.

Its next episode did worse with a 0.9 rating and a viewership of 2.48 million. Figures have continually dipped since then.

FOX executives have remained optimistic about this big gamble.

"It's a super-aspirational title. It's a very grand idea. It's about all the fundamental pieces of a society: law, sexuality, religion, politics and so on," said Simon Andreae, FOX head for alternative programming.

Utopia executive producer Conrad Green dreams of seeing "people from very different backgrounds across America coming together, working out their differences, working out new ways of structuring a society."

But will Utopia TV series live up to its name? We'll soon find out.
