'Time Out of Mind' Latest News and Update: Richard Gere on His Experience as a Homeless Guy
Be careful when you are passing by a homeless guy, it might actually be Richard Gere. Gere has taken acting to another level, spending at least several weeks living in the streets of New York while filming his newest film "Time Out of Mind." In the movie, Richard Gere plays the role of an alcoholic elderly mane that is now a part of homeless population in the city. He wore a "black-knit winter hat and clutching an empty coffee cup." The actor approached innocent passers-by and he will ask them for spare change. Director Oren Moverman and the rest of the crew are filming everything from a block away.
Well, if you think that Richard Gere is easily recognizable - apparently not. Almost no one recognizes him but according to the actor, "There were two or three times where someone talked to me on the street." Gere also said in a press conference that there was this one time when "a French tourist, a woman, who totally thought I was a homeless guy and gave me some food. The other two times were African-Americans and they just passed me and went, 'Hey Rich, how you doin' man?' No question about what I was doing there or 'Have you fallen on hard times?' and 'What happened to your career?' Just "Hey Rich, how you doin' man," and they just continued on."
But most of the time, no one will even glance at him and the actor said he needed that to "get into character." He said that by experiencing homelessness, even for a few weeks, he realized that it is very easy to go into this scary place we're people have no connection to other people.
"Time Out Of Mind" is currently without a distributor but the script for the film has been around. According to Gere, he came across the script about a decade ago. It was originally written in the last 80's but the details of the film are still relevant to our present time. Gere had been a long-time supporter of Coalition for Homeless and he admitted that he couldn't get the script out of his mind. After meeting Moverman, he knew he found a partner and a collaborator that can bring "Time Out of Mind" to life.
Gere's popularity was a problem at first. Imagine being out of the streets and being mob by fans. So they did a test shoot where Gere will actually approached people and the actor said, "And nobody saw me!
