Hong Kong protests: Fire chat app is playing a crucial role
The protests in Hong Kong are ongoing since September, disturbing the country's political and financial scenario. Students joined the protest by marching and removing the security barriers. The student leader Joshua Wong plays a key role in the protest. Some people think that he is with the US and hence creating turmoil in Hong Kong. China is not easy to be conquered by US but HK can be easier for US. Chinese do not favor such protests. Wong is considered to be a nuisance.
Due to the protests, there are times when internet is down. This is good for the HK police and government, as the people cannot message each other. This is when the US based Fire chat app comes in handy. This app has come to them as a boon. The protestors can message each other at the peak protest time when the networks are jammed. They do not need any Internet while using this app. Therefore, they do not need to rely on internet. More and more people in HK are joining and downloading the fire chat app.
The company behind Fire chat has claimed that more than one hundred thousand Hong Kong people downloaded the app in a single day. The company promises to provide good services to the people. The Hong Kong people are bombarded with thousands of messages including the fake ones.
There are many websites and social networking sites that are also instrumental to the protests, making China believe that the US is helping those protesting. It is a fact that Chinese do suspect the role of US behind the protests and somewhere they do feel that US ultimately want China to be their territory.
China's security for social media is very stringent. They do not allow people to barge in without proper identity proof. Even Hong Kong has some sites where in people have to show their ID before signing in. However, despite these restrictions, the social media is playing a crucial role now days in any economy of the world.
