Exclusive Interview with Red Roots as They Talk About their New Album "Triplicity"

They are young.  They are triplets.  And they sing with an undeniable passion for Jesus Christ.  In a world that lacks young Godly models that are not afraid to sing about Jesus, Red Roots is indeed a treasure.  They have just released their brand new Daywind Records album "Triplicity"  ---  a collection bristling with smashing new country-pop songs that exalts Jesus and reaches out to the world with His love.  We are so privileged to be able to chat with them for this exclusive look at their new album: 

 Hallels:  Thank you so much for doing this interview with us.  For starters, tell us what is the story behind your name "Red Roots"?

The name Red Roots comes from our Red hair, but more importantly it comes from the fact we are rooted in the shed blood of Jesus Christ.

 Hallels:  Congratulations on the release of your new third album "Triplicity."  How is this album different or similar relative to your two earlier records? 

Triplicity means the phenomenon of three. This is our 3rd album, we are triplets, we wrote 3 songs on the album, so we felt this name was appropriate ha. Also, God worked alot in 3s in the bible. For instance, the trinity, 3 days Jesus rose from the grave etc...   

Hallels:  This album is released by Daywind Records which is also the recording home of some of the best Southern Gospel artists such as Blackwood Brothers Quartet and Brian Free and Assurance.  Yet, your sound is more modern country, is this deliberate?

hahaha yes.  We grew up listening to Christian groups like Barlowgirl and Superchick, and we would perform our favorite songs in our Middle school and High school praise band. Nicole played drums, Nika electric/acoustic guitar, and me, Natalie, would play the keyboard or bass.  These were actually our first instruments we learned, and our first song was Shout to the Lord which is SUPER hard and too hard for us to play well at the time.  We also listened to Country music like the Dixie Chicks and Shania Twain when we were younger, but at 13 we felt God leading us to give up listening to secular music during our teenage years because to us, that is the most life altering time and needed all the good influences we could get. We saw the Dixie Chick girls making the banjo and violin cool, so that kind of inspired us to start picking up those instruments a little after our rock instruments. We had around 100 or more local gigs when we were 13-18, and we would perform half bluegrass and half rock. All Christian of course, but it stretched us way too thin.  We realized most of our friends were listening to either CCM or Country, so we wanted to play Christian music they could like and listen to, so we started wanting to blend our two sounds. Rick and Micah Schweinsberg of Daywind also had that goal in mind when they started developing us as a band.  They really helped us have an edgy, pop sound while keeping our grassy roots.  We love music in general and are trying to learn everyday.  We want to reach the lost and God has laid Christian music in general on our hearts whatever genre it's labeled as.

Hallels:  "Triplicity" finds you selecting songs written by some of the biggest names in the Christian and Country music such as Tony Wood, Barry Weeks, Sam Mizell, and Kenna Turner West amongst others.  How did you come to choose these songs? 

We were so honored to be pitched songs by those talented songwriters. We are always looking for songs that everyone can relate to in their everyday life. Songs we believe in 100% are the ones we choose.  Some just fun, sassy, songs are chosen too because Christians can be sassy in a good way and have fun.  We want songs that scream Christian Power because the world is screaming the opposite as loud as possible.  It's so necessary these days to be proud to have standards, to be proud to be a Christian, to be bold in everything you do!

Hallels:  Do you have a favorite song off the record?  And if you have to pick one song from the record you are the most proud of, which would it be?

My favorite song is probably "Great Big Yes" because Satan is out to destroy every person in the world and wants people to say no one cares about you, no one sees you, no one created you, no one loves you, but God cares about you, God sees you, God cares about you, God loves you! I think most people ask this question in some form during their life. I know I have.  My question was answered and peace came into my life truer than anything on this earth. 

The song I'm most proud of is probably "Straight Shooter" because Country songs or Pop songs usually talk about wanting a heartbreaker or a lousy guy.  This is saying we want a guy who has "God in his sights, trying to do what's right, treat her like a queen for the rest of her life." Society tells girls to chase guys and then give them all you have physically and emotionally in order for you to keep them.  We are looking for the one God has in mind for us.  Plus, I like it cause I can be sassy and feel like I should put my hand on my hip ha. 

Hallels:  Let's get more specific with the songs, I really love "If I Could."  I have read somewhere that this song was actually inspired by a close friend.  Can you tell us what the song is about and the inspiration behind it?

We wrote this one about a friend we went to Youth Group and School with.  She was always struggling with guys, decisions, and sticking to her guns, and it was hard to watch her being sucked in by the world.  We wanted to make her follow Christ(not that we're perfect in any way), but we had to realize only Jesus has the power to change someone's life and restore them.  He gave us all free will, and it's super hard to just stand by and watch as someone uses that free will negatively.  Nika, Nicole, and I feel so blessed to have each other as accountability and Christian parents.  I can't judge others when they haven't had the Christian surroundings I've had, and plus, I'm far from perfect. We wanted to say that we were hurting with her and express that people that care about their friend or relative that is involved with sin, are hurting along with that person too.

Hallels:  In a number of songs such as "Ordinary Girl" and "Straight Shooter," you were trying to be of encouragement to your listeners.  I am sure there are many of our younger readers who look to you as role models, what does it mean to be a Godly role model?

Those songs do express having standards.  We looked up to Barlowgirl when we were younger. They always made us feel like we weren't the only ones following Christ, not going to parties, not doing drugs, and not dating every sleezeball(not that all guys are sleezy). If people ever consider us role models, we will be the first to say we are NOT perfect in any way. The only good we have comes from Christ, and Christ is who we aim to model our lives after. We do want to encourage youth and adults to live Christ and let Him use you.  Stand for Him because He is the only one worth standing for. You are not alone.  You are never alone. Christ is always there and keeps His promises.
