We are all so focused on movies out of North America and foreign language films out of Europe that we are almost shocked when a movie has a tag from anywhere else. The movie Gloria is a Spanish language movie out of Chile that was chosen for an Oscar but did not get a nomination. The movie is written, directed and produced by Sebastian Lelio who has done a host of Spanish language short films including Cuatro and Carga Vital. Sebastian is a well known and well respected Chilean film maker and the movie Gloria is a testament to his superior film making abilities.

Gloria is a movie that centers on a woman who is in her mid fifties. Instead of knitting booties and waiting on the end of her life, Gloria still has a whole lot of life in her. Unfortunately, nobody pays her any attention including her children and our protagonist however aches for a person to shower with affection. She goes to a gathering where she meets a man whom she obviously likes but ends up going home alone, undeterred she goes back the next day and this time meets a gentleman around her own age who is interested. As one would expect with age comes baggage and with Rodolfo, our divorced former naval officer, comes a wife and daughters who just won't let go. The man is tethered to his family and will not abandon them for this new love. This leads to the death of this relationship but our heroine is the better for it.

The movie is reminiscent of its complicated and other movies about people of a certain age and is a generally feel good movie. Starring Paulina Garcia who won the Silver Bear for Best Actress at the 63^rd Berlin International Film Festival, Sergio Hernandes and Diego Fontecilla the movie received generally good reviews at the 2013 Berlin International Film Festival. It is certainly a good foreign language addition to any DVD library.
