The current year's update as concerns the Apple iPad Air which was recently unveiled at the Cupertino keynote event looks to have been quite minor at best.  It may have been peer pressure from Google slabs like the Sony Z3 and the Samsung Galaxy Tab S4 which encouraged Apple to pare another millimeter or so from the already slim 7.5 mm thin first generation iPad Air. On the other hand, it could be Apple's drive toward nothingness as concerns the Z dimension in the Z dimension, starting with the MacBook Air as well as the manila envelope debut in 2008. At the same time it adds a whole extra processor core to become a tri-core rather than the dual core system.  As such, things may not seem all that different on the exterior but the performance and design features have subtly been altered to provide a better version.
