Proverb Newsome Shares with Hallels His Vision, His New EP & His Testimony
Proverb Newsome has been dropping gems in ears since the early 90s. He first hit the national scene with his group 1Way in 1995 with the project Destination Unknown. Proverb's solo project debut was A Common Mans Opus. This collection of songs that spoke directly from the heart of the artist. What he believes, why he believes it.
Now Proverb is getting set to release his sophomore solo effort The Gaze EP. This project features a more mature experienced emcee as well as more features than the last project. The first single from The Gaze EP is Stand Tall ft. B.I.C. The message of the song is crystal clear: "we gone stand, we gone stand man no matter what. The right hand of the Lamb got us holdin up. We stand tall on His word cause His words enough."
We are so honored to catch up with Proverb for this Hallels' exclusive interview.
Hallels: Thank you so much for doing this interview with us. How did you come to know the Lord?
I knew about Jesus my whole life. My Mom always took me to Church. Most of my fam was Christians too. My parents even put me in a Christian school. I was in that school from 1st grade though 8th grade. But it wasn't until middle school that I really made my faith my own by going public and getting baptized. That was in 1984. I credit my mom and my child hood church and my school for leading my to Christ. Sometimes I wish I had more of a story but my story is really what the Lord did after he saved me or should I say what I did to the Lord. God is incredibly gracias and now I and a trophy of his grace.
Hallels: When and how did you feel the Lord's call into making music for him?
I never felt the Lord calling me to make music for Him. I have always loved music and always wanted to do it. I have been a Christian for a major part of my life. Christ is my identity so when the opportunity to make music came along I mean, what other music would I do? I had to make music that came from who I was and that is a Christian dude from Tamrind Ave telling listeners why he has hope and why he is different.
Hallels: What's your ultimate goal when you sing and record songs?
Sometimes I wanna tell a story. Other times I wanna just rhyme about life and how I navigate it as a African American Christian man. Ultimately it is so people can see that Christian are not perfect but imperfect people pursued by a loving God!
Hallels: Congratulations on your new EP "The Gaze." How is this new EP different or/similar to your previous release?
My last project A Common Man's Opus was a coming out party of sorts. It was the first solo project I had ever done after being in my group 1Way for years. It was east coast hip-hop. The Gaze is still east coast but there is more collaboration. I worked with singers, other writers, a lot of different producers. Plus there was a lot of life lived between both projects so it produces more mature music.
Hallels: For our readers who may not have heard your new song "Stand Tall," what is the song about?
The song is about having resolve. Not matter what life throws at you or where you may find yourself if you have a relationship with with Christ that is the bedrock, the foundation. You can stand on it. Ephesians 6:13-17
Hallels: When you are not singing or touring, are you involved in worship ministry in a local church
I am a growth group leader at my church. And I work as director of programs for an urban ministry one West Palm Beach, Fl.
Hallels: For our readers who would like to purchase your new EP or/and find out more about you, where can they go?
They can check me out all over social media but the best way to find it all is at www.proverbnewsome.com
