British Hip Hop Artist Presha J Talks About His Married Life & Comeback EP
It's been two long years since British Hip Hop artist Presha J released his last single 'Throw It In The Air', and nearly a decade since his debut EP Changes was released in 2008. After taking time away from music for life and to start a family, the London native is proud to be back, with the announcement of his sophomore EP Traveller's Guide, which is to be released on October 23 via Writeway Music.
Leading Presha J's triumphant, no holds barred, return to the music landscape is new single 'Live For You' featuring emerging singer-songwriter Leke, and produced by Smylee (Victizzle, Faith Child). Accompanied by thematic and abstract visuals directed by Dvisionaiir, 'Live For You' is an upbeat, inspiration and life-affirming opus, backed by thumping drums, an infectious bassline and heavy synths, over which Presha J waxes lyrical about standing firm in his faith.
Hallels: Thanks for doing this interview with us. I believe you took a two-year hiatus in getting married. How's married life?
Married life is really good. It's taught me a lot about myself, especially the importance of being selfless. It's helped me to mature. It's really nice to come home everyday to someone I can be myself with; I can share my all thoughts and feelings with her. We're in a generation where people don't really value the importance of marriage but I am so happy I took this step.
Hallels: Why did you decided to come back in making new music?
I decided to come back because I love music - music has always been a huge influence in my life. I love the fact that my music can encourage, inspire and challenge my listeners. My new project does just that.
Hallels: How has this break helped or hindered you in terms of making of this new album?
This break has given me the opportunity to mature musically - I truly understand why I make music now. I spent a lot of time reflecting on my own personal journey but also discovered the journeys of those around me. This influenced me to work on my upcoming EP 'The Traveller's Guide'
Hallels: You have a brand new single out "Live for You." What's the song about?
'Live for You' is a track to encourage others but also myself about the importance of standing for what we believe in. It can be difficult to live within a society that tells you that your faith is not valued but 'Live for You' shuns that mindset and tells you to stand strong. Living for God = Living for life! Life can be lived to the full, once you know who you're living for.
Hallels: You are also working on your new EP, why did you call it "Traveller's Guide"?
I came up with the name straight after my first EP 'Changes' which was released in 2008. I wanted this EP to take my listeners on a journey. I immediately got images of a compass, luggage and road signs which pointed to the concept of travelling. With God being our guide, I thought of 'The Traveller's Guide'. Despite the journeys we all take, we always have a guide who is with us.
Hallels: How would you describe the sound of your new EP?
This EP is out of my comfort zone. I am used to grime (always loved it and always will) but I decided to challenge myself musically. This EP is mellow, thought-provoking and easy listening. I wanted each track to paint a picture within the minds of those that hear it.
Hallels: Who did you work with for this new album? And when will the EP be released?
I worked with the following producers; G Kid, GP, Smylee and Christian Manell and the following singers; Leke, Christian Manell, Mr DaMention and Hypertone.
Hallels: For our readers who would like to find out more about you or music, where can they go?
'The Traveller's Guide' will be out on 23 October.
