Drake White Kicks Off 2019 In Haiti With Agape To The Nations
Acclaimed songwriter and recording artist Drake White, along with his wife Alex, spent the first week of 2019 in poverty stricken Les Cayes, Haiti. Hosted by Agape to the Nations, the couple (alongside a group of 30 missionaries) served teenagers who've aged out of orphanages across the Carribbean country.
"I first found out about Agape to the Nations when Alex went last year. Her heart was opened, and I was compelled by their work," says Drake. "She came home with a passion for this organization and seeing that in her broke through any apprehension that I had previously had about the journey. To serve is our heart, and the fulfillment that we received through meeting the locals and missionaries changed our perspective and our lives.
"I reached out to Kinsley [Smith, Co-founder, Agape to the Nations] and asked how we could help," Drake continues. "It was then and there we decided to see firsthand what was going on in Haiti. What we discovered was lifechanging - I couldn't have imagined the need, and how a little goes a long way in helping people in a developing world country. Without Agape's help, hundreds of children would be forced to live on the streets. I encourage anyone and everyone to go on a trip if possible, but at the very least, donate to this incredibly worthwhile cause. You will be helping someone."
The "All Would Be Right With The World" singer's award-winning music bridged the communication gap and united the group.
"Music has no language barrier. Even though our teens in our program and Drake couldn't speak the same language, once the guitar was picked up there was no language barrier," shares Kinsley. "Same thing goes for love. Love has no language barrier. When you truly are showing Christ's love, like Alex and Drake did serving with us, you see love as the universal language able to overcome any circumstance, culture, race, and background. We all have different talents and gifts and it was so cool to see them both using their gifts and talents for God's glory."
Agape team member Joyell Dalton adds, "Having Drake and Alex as part of our team was an honor and blessing. Seeing Alex serve with her sweet spirit and infectious smile at the nursing home, hospital, in the community and with the Agape teens, was a true inspiration.
"Seeing Drake use his musical gifts and his hard work ethic for God's Kingdom was impressive," Joyell continues. "What really stood out to me was a couple from Tennessee with a busy schedule said 'YES' to serving the Lord through Agape. Seeing them serve together as husband and wife was a true blessing."
Agape Haiti Mission was founded in 2015 by Charlie and Kinsley Smith with the goal of equipping, encouraging, and empowering teens who have aged out of their orphanage. The nonprofit helps these teens finish their educations, train them in life skills, and ready them for their next phase of life. "These kids are smart and full of hope - their futures are what inspired us to start Agape. We know they are the change for the next generation," says Kinsley. Agape has four transitional homes in Haiti and one in Uganda.
