NBA Veteran Rex Chapman Facing Felony Charge, Arrested After Shoplifting in an Apple Store
At around 1:45 PM last Friday, Rex Chapman, a former NBA veteran and a former member of Kentucky Wildcat were arrested for "alleged theft at a Scottsdale Apple Store."
The police said that Chapman stole $14,000 worth of merchandise in the store. He is allegedly selling the merchandise for cash at pawnshops and other establishments.
According to reports, this is not the first time that the incident happened. The police said that they started investigating the case back in August and employees at Scottsdale Apple Store have reported several incident of "theft or shoplifting" by the same suspect. The events took place over a period of several months.
Many of the employees identified Rex Chapman as the suspect. Chapman would go and choose the items and would pretend that he is using the iPhone EasyPay app, to pay for the items, but he will not pay for the merchandize. He will just go through the store's self checkout system without actually paying for anything.
The employees identified Chapman as the suspect and they all claim to know him, since he is a famous basketball royalty and all.
For a guy who reportedly made $22 million throughout her NBA career, this behavior is quite bizaare and disturbing. Chapman started his career in 1988 after he was drafted and he spent twelve years in NBA not only as a basketball player but also as a vice-president of for the Denver Nuggets.
He is now facing nine felony counts of Organized Retail Theft and Trafficking in Stolen Goods.
Another area of concern is security of the EasyPay app. The incident with Chapman raised the question of how do shopowners would know that the user is really paying the items already stealing.
