'Deadpool' Movie Update: 'Merc With a Mouth' Will Star in His Own PG-13 Movie In 2016
Good news for Marvel Comics' "Deadpool," fans! The "Merc with a Mouth" will have its first big screen debut solo film on February 2016. "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" cast member Ryan Reynolds will reprise his role as Wade Wilson aka "Deadpool."
In a recent interview with Yahoo! Movies UK, Reynolds said, "In its current iteration, the movie's actually very small. There's minimal impact to the studio, which is the way we're kind of presenting it to them. We're saying 'Look, the budget is minimal. Therefore, can we do this the way it should be done?' Which unfortunately needs a Rated R or it needs those elements."
Although there is still no confirmation as to whether the "Deadpool" movie would choose the PG-13 route to cater to a much younger audience or not, this poses a question of whether hardcore Wade Wilson fans will accept a "toned-down" version of their favorite mercenary. Throughout Deadpool's comic history, he's been known to not have a filter with what comes out of his mouth, and from time to time, break the 4th wall.
Though in some technicality, "Deadpool" is already linked to the "X-Men" movie franchise, the 2009 movie disaster known as "X-Men Origins: Wolverine," which left such a bad taste in "Deadpool" fans mouth that people just chose to forget it.
But according to producer, Simon Kinberg, their original plan is to have "Deadpool" in a shared universe with Wolverine and the rest of the "X-Men" movie franchise.
In an interview with ComicBook, Kinberg explained that, "There's definitely a sort of overall plan that we've all been talking about for the X-Men universe now, and Deadpool obviously fits into that. So yeah, I guess I would say it's part of certainly an overall timeline and thought process that goes into these films, some of which is inspired by the comics and some which is inspired by seeing what Marvel's done with telling a larger tapestry and linking all those movies together, even as they stand independently as well. The same kind of thought is going to go into these X-Men movies at Fox."
With the success of other movie studios with their superhero crossover movies, it would seem highly likely that Fox would continue with their shared universe plan, amidst the failed "Deadpool" debut back in 2009.
