'Tetris The Movie' - Another Brand Obsession! Is It Going to be Spectacular or Not?
When it was announced that "Tetris The Movie" is in the works, a lot were thinking what kind of story can the creators deliver. Is it going to be about shapes interlocking together? Sounds weird, right? Sure, branding is really popular right now, but unlike other "brands" in Hollywood - "Batman" or "X-Men" for example, Tetris have no plot at all, but so is "Lego."
According to Washington Post, "The LEGO Movie" is one of the top-grossing film of 2014 with at least $257 million domestically and believe it or not, it is even ahead of "Transformers: The Age of Extinction" with only $245 million. This is enough reason for film executives to consider making "Tetris The Movie."
The Wall Street Journal said that the production of the film is going to be the product of Tetris Company working together with Threshold Entertainment. In an interview with Speakeasy, Threshold CEO Larry Kasanoff said, "It's a very big, epic sci-fi movie. This is isn't a movie with a bunch of lines running around the page. We're not giving feet to the geometric shapes." With that being said, viewers can breathe a sigh of relief.
Kasanoff is the man behind other successful brands in Hollywood. Remember "Mortal Kombat" and "Mortal Kombat Annihilation?" He added, "Brands are the new stars of Hollywood. We have a story behind "Tetris" which makes it a much more imaginative thing."
He is actually banking on the success of the film adaptation of Tetris, Raw Story reports. Kasanoff said in WSJ, "We certainly have the canvas for location-based entertainment based on the epicness."
It has been proven time and time again that "branding" in Hollywood can guarantee success. Kasanoff promised that the story of 'Tetris' will be "imaginative".
Threshold Entertainment has worked with Marvel, Lego and even "Star Wars" typically in digital and space animation works.
Alexey Pajitnov is the creator of the "Tetris." He is a game designer from the former Soviet Union when he released the game in 1984. The game became a success worldwide. Nintendo made a deal with the Pajitnov to bundle Tetris with Game Boy
Some critics are skeptical about the planned Tetris movie since it's based on a game where you fit different shapes of blocks. For now, we still have to wait for further developments on this "Tetris" movie.
