Directed by Kenneth Branagh, the new Cinderella movie is headlined by Cate Blanchette as the wicked stepmother Lady Tremaine and Lily James in the title role. Others in the cast include Holliday Grainger and Sophie McSherra as Cinderella’s wicked stepsisters Anastacia and Drizella, respectively; Richard Madden as Prince Charming; Helena Bonham Carter as the Fairy Godmother; Stellan Skarsgard as the Grand Duke; Derek Jacobi as the King; Nonzo Anosie as the Captain; and Hayley Atwell and Ben Chaplin as Cinderella’s mother and father, respectively. According to Branagh, “With Lily James we have found our perfect Cinderella. She combines knockout beauty with intelligence, wit, fun and physical grace.” Branagh’s “Cinderella” will reportedly also offer some refreshing script writing talent and some really fascinating cinematography. Eric Eisenberg of Cinema Blend, who was among those who watched the special screening of some of the film’s footage during CinemaCon, said, “While we were told before the footage that some of the special effects had yet to be completed and that the movie is still very much a work in process, I was definitely impressed by what I saw. There is an interesting mix of tones at work, as heavy drama is lightened by some funny dialogue and rapport, and the film looks gorgeously shot. Of course, this is the footage that Disney wanted us to see in order to get us excited for the film, but my interest is definitely piqued.” The screenplay was written by Aline Brosh McKenna and Chris Weitz while cinematography was done by Haris Zambarloukos. According to Hollywood Reporter’s insider sources, the schedule reset was made because the film still needed more special effects work. According to Variety, the decision “was prompted by weak response to a research screening in late April and the fact that the visual effects, on which the futuristic thriller heavily relies, were incomplete.” Warner Bros.’ domestic distribution chief Dan Fellman told Variety that the Wachowskis needed more time to complete their work on more than 2,000 special effects shots in the film. He said, “With the July release date, they were just not going to make it on time. A lot of the issue for us was getting it ready for the international release, since the foreign territories need additional time.” Warner Bros. and Australia’s Village Roadshow Pictures co-financed Jupiter Ascending, a $150 million project. Warner will pay over $100 million for the worldwide marketing of the movie while the remainder will be covered by Village Roadshow. Jupiter Ascending is written, produced and directed by The Wachowskis, the brother-and-sister team of Andy and Lana Wachowski of The Matrix trilogy and V for Vendetta fame. The forthcoming sci-fi flick tells the story of Jupiter Jones (played by Mila Kunis), a lowly, unlucky Chicago cleaning lady who learns that she’s been pre-destined to become Queen of the Universe.
